Nothing beats cool air blowing from an air conditioner on a hot day. Even better, today’s units are quieter and more energy-efficient than ever. Take note, however, that they’re not all created equal. When you’re in the market for a new cooling system, you must be aware of the key features to look for. The Ice-Man, your trusted AC contractor, discusses them here.

Air Filter
The main purpose of the air filter is to protect the sensitive components of the air conditioning unit from contaminants like dust and dirt. Make sure it’s within easy reach—having it installed in a convenient location in your home allows you to clean or replace the filter every two months.
R-410A Refrigerant
R-22, also known as Freon, has been the standard coolant of AC units in the United States. However, just this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned it from production and importation into the country. R-410A, one of the greener substitutes to R-22, has zero chlorine content, which means it doesn’t affect the ozone layer. One of the downsides, however, is that it contributes to the greenhouse gas effect. Nonetheless, it’s the most eco-friendly option the HVAC industry has to offer.
Ductwork
Serving as the distribution system for heating and air conditioning systems, ductwork is another feature you need to look into. The ducts should be properly sized; that is, the space within the round ducts must be big enough for optimal comfort. They should also have enough insulation on the outside to limit heat transfer that results in energy loss.
Metal Coils
An air conditioner works by removing humidity from warm indoor air before cooling and cycling it back indoors through the return vents. Condenser coils are responsible for the first phase of this process. They’re usually made of metal due to their efficiency and longevity. Aluminum and copper coils and fins, for instance, are resistant to corrosion.
