HVAC systems are generally expected to work harder during the winter season. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. You can enjoy maximum comfort inside your home without straining your HVAC system excessively and paying for higher utility bills. The key is to properly winterize your heating and air conditioning system.
In this post, The Ice-Man shares a few basic tips on how to winterize your home’s HVAC system.
HVAC maintenance. HVAC maintenance is often done once in the spring and once in the fall because these are typically the seasons when heating and cooling systems are used the least. These times are also ideal for HVAC inspections, cleaning and routine maintenance so you can get your system ready for summer and winter, which usually see extreme weather changes. If you’re able to keep your HVAC system well-maintained, you can expect it to perform with optimal efficiency, even on the coldest (or hottest) days of the year.
Climate zones. Your AC contractor will also likely recommend creating climate zones throughout your house as a way to winterize it. Multi-story homes tend to have inconsistent indoor temperatures during the winter, so you may notice the upper floors feel warmer during this season. To avoid this kind of issue and maximize comfort in key areas of your home, you should have a climate zone system installed. Be sure to add wireless sensors as well, since these can help detect the areas where heated or cooled air is needed most, thus helping your climate zone system direct the airflow in your home appropriately.
Repairs. Check your vents for any gaps that could cause drafts in your indoor spaces, and make certain to seal them immediately. Remember that drafts can affect how your HVAC system works, as they disrupt the temperature in spots where the vents are located. This causes the system to work harder than necessary, driving up your energy consumption and utility bills.
