Given how your air conditioning system sees almost constant use all summer long, it may start developing some issues. Fortunately, the warning signs are fairly easy to notice–like the water leaking from your system, for instance. When overlooked, this can lead to a number of performance issues, so this is something you should deal with promptly. The first thing to do is identify the cause of this leak. The Ice-Man, a trusted heating and air conditioning expert in the area, shares some possible reasons here.
1. Clogged Condensate Line. The indoor unit of your AC system contains the evaporator coil, which cools the warm air blown over it. This generates condensation, which forms on the coil and drips down a condensate drain line. When the condensate drain line gets clogged, however, it can cause water to back up and leak inside your home.
Solution: Call a trusted AC contractor like The Ice-Man to remove the buildup inside the condensate line and ensure proper draining ability.
2. Dirty Air Filters. Over time, dust and debris can accumulate inside your air filters and block airflow over the evaporator coil. This causes the evaporator coil to freeze over, and once it melts, the excess amount of water can leak out of the system and into your home.
Solution: Check your air filters regularly and replace them as necessary. Most HVAC professionals recommend a new one every three months–or more often depending on the season.
3. Low Refrigerant. The refrigerant is a chemical blend that helps your AC system deliver excellent cooling performance. A specific amount of this chemical should be maintained inside the AC, and if it gets low, it can cause the evaporator to freeze over. As with dirty air filters, the water overflows through the drain pan once it melts.
Solution: Depending on how serious the refrigerant leak was, your HVAC contractor can either provide expert AC repair or replace the whole unit instead.
